What is a Large Energy User?
Here at EnergyBroker we consider a Large Energy User to be any business where electricity is metered half hourly and gas is measured daily. LEU contracts can be fixed or variable. Deciding on what option to take often depends on the level of energy expertise within an organisation.
Businesses vary greatly in size and scope. Consequently, suppliers categorise their corporate clients into two groups: (i) small and medium energy users and (ii) large energy users.
How to Determine if you are a Large Energy User
Electricity meter classification
If your electricity meter DUoS Group is DG6, DG7, or DG8, you will be identified as a large energy user.
High gas consumption
You will be identified as a large energy user if your annual gas consumption (EAC) exceeds 750,000 kWh or if your Supply Point Capacity (SPC) surpasses 3,750 kWh.
High electricity consumption
You will be identified as a large energy user if your annual electricity consumption exceeds 500,000 kWh or if your Maximum Import Capacity (MIC) is over 150 kVA.
Check your Maximum Import Capacity (MIC)
The strength of the electrical connection applied to your business is called the Maximum Import Capacity (MIC).
Maximum Import Capacity (MIC) is the peak electricity demand your connection can handle, measured in kilovolt-amps (kVA), similar to kilowatts. A maximum demand meter tracks usage and alerts if it's too high. As a large energy user, you'll have an allocated MIC. It's crucial to set the MIC correctly to avoid extra costs; too high means overpaying, too low leads to Excess Capacity charges. Your contractor or energy consultant can determine the right MIC for you.
A Large Energy User will face a much higher degree of exposure to wholesale energy market changes, then say, a domestic energy user would. But with these bigger risks comes bigger rewards when prices fall.
With the right advise, the opportunities to save money in the energy market are very cost effective.
Can I switch my Half Hourly and Daily energy tariffs?
