Micro generation is coming to Ireland. This is the practice of using renewable technology to provide power to a building, and crucially, to sell excess power back to the grid when possible. The department of environment, climate and communications recently launched a consultation into the development of a microgeneration support scheme.

Soon, when a business installs a renewable energy technology, not only will they reap the benefits of free electricity and lower bills, but they will also be able to sell excess energy back to the grid if they wish to do so. The scheme is directed towards SME rather than large or industrial business, as renewable installations with a maximum size of 50kW can partake.

What are the advantages to Micro Generation?

  • Makes your business more sustainable
  • Lower the cost of electricity bills
  • Increase the value of your property
  • Continuity of supply
  • Sell excess energy to the grid

What are the disadvantages of Micro generation?

  •  High capital cost
  • Maintenance costs
  • Space required for installation
